Bio
Calum is an end-to-end product designer who crafts data-driven digital experiences and custom software, most recently for data scientists and data engineers developing artificial intelligence + machine learning. Specialising in information design and data visualization, he produces user interfaces for digital products that enable users to easily understand complex data and achieve their goals.

His user-centred approach ensures features are researched, designed and delivered on time, using best practice agile methods. A certified Scrum Master with a deep product toolkit, he works in empowered product teams to deliver user value. Key skills include running user interviews/workshops, designing bespoke UI and working closely with engineers to ensure features work as designed.
An expert in creating delightful, user-centric digital experiences, he translates raw data into insightful visualizations to help users make sense of their data. Using his skills in typography, colour theory, grid systems and accessibility, he clearly conveys complex concepts to the user with pixel-perfect precision.
A native English speaker with experience in start-up, agency and corporate environments, he has led product and client teams while also managing and mentoring junior team members (both in-person and remotely).

Experience
Calum joined QuantumBlack as the 13th employee when it was a start-up in 2013, going on to lead the data viz offering on client projects while also contributing to branding and marketing teams.
In 2018 he joined specialist information design agency Beyond Words Studio where he led projects designing apps, websites, presentations, reports, animations and social media posts.
He re-joined QuantumBlack in 2020 in the Labs division, working on AI software. He was lead designer of digital products ‘Studio’ (a metadata management and visualization tool), ‘Diagrams’ (a tool for generating entity-relationship diagrams with code) and ‘Layer’ (a machine learning operations platform).
In 2023 Calum set-up his freelance design business, providing product design and UX/UI services to clients in the tech industry.
Education
Calum studied BA(Hons) Graphic Design at Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication in London, winning an industry award for his final-year project.
His work has been exhibited at 71a Gallery and Protein Studios in London, been published in Hong Kong-based BranD Magazine and featured on industry-leading UK website Creative Review.
He has taught on the MA Data Visualisation course at London College of Communication and given talks at various design meetups in London.
